Ladies and gentlemen, Mr. and Mrs. Michael Doles. The ceremony was performed by their pastor, Paul Wirth, of Relevant Church in the Ybor City section of Tampa. I had the privilege of serving Mike and Jenny their first communion as man and wife. (Photo is by one of the wedding guests.)

Blessed is the man who fears the Lord,

Who delights greatly in His commandments.

His descendants will be mighty on earth;

The generation of the upright will be blessed.

March 2010 Update

Dear Barefoot Friends

This month we are in the home stretch for our son, Michael's, wedding. On March 27, he will marry Jenny Luebke at Safety Harbor Resort Spa, which is built over Espiritu Santo Springs (Springs of the Holy Spirit!). We look forward to welcoming our new daughter-in-love into the family. As you can imagine, this has largely been our focus, but we have managed to get a few other things done, too.

At the end of February, Suz and I were part of the 2010 convening of International Apostolic Ministries, the body that ordained us back in 2002. It is always a special event for us and this year was no exception. We caught up with some old friends and also made some new ones. Once again, the worship was wonderful and unbounded.

In the Tuesday a.m. Bible study, we continue our study through First Peter. We've also been blogging through it at The Faith Log (see below in Keeping the Faith in Tough Times) — though we've gotten further on the blog than we actually have in class.

WBM Books for iPhone

Suzanne and I recently upgraded our cell phones. We're still getting used to our new iPhones but already we are seeing how much more functional they are. They have an internet capability which allows me to keep close tabs on our ministry functions online. Also downloaded Logos, a Bible app so now I always have a variety of translations of the Word and a few study tools at hand. And I also download a Kindle app, which is really what I wanted to tell you about. As you might remember, we have converted all of our books into Amazon's Kindle forma t — more and more people are reading ebooks, and that will increase — and now you can read our books on iPhones.

February 2010 Update

Dear Barefoot Friends,

Had a wonderful Christmas with our family. Got Suz a Wii. The kids got us Wii Fit and Mario Kart. We haven't gotten around to Wii Fitting yet — still exploring the nuances of the Mario Kart.

January was very cold, of course, even for Florida. Did a lot of blogging. Inside, where it was warm.

In the Tuesday a.m. Bible study, we started in 1 Peter. That has also been the subject of most of my recent blogging (see below in Keeping the Faith in Tough Times). I expect it will turn into a book. That's called "re-tasking" : )

We also have a few other book projects in mind. It is proving to be a fruitful field for ministry outreach (see below in February 2010 Notes from our Friends), through blogging, print and now the growing popularity of ebooks.

This month, we look toward the annual convening of International Apostolic Ministries. We believe the Lord is preparing to shift it into a new gear and a higher level.

Advent and Christmas is our favorite time of year, especially as we celebrate it with our family and friends. We love to decorate for the season and it seems that our Christmas tree gets bigger each year. What we value most, though, is the heart of Christmas — the coming of the Lord Jesus into the world. We honor the season of Advent, the four weeks leading up to Christmas, as a time of preparing out hearts to celebrate the birth of the King. “Let every heart prepare Him room,” as the old song says.

November Update

Dear Barefoot Friends,

Another year is rushing towards the finish line. The older we get, the quicker they seem to pass. We greatly enjoyed the summer season, but we love autumn, which signals for us the season of Thanksgiving (we always have a BIG family celebration). Then Advent will be upon us, the beginning of a new year in the seasons of the Church calendar.

This year, of course, we are releasing our new Christmas CD, a project we started a few years back but then set aside for a while. Now we are sowing it as seed. I am particularly struck by how so many of the carols are about the coming of Jesus into the world, not only as Savior and Redeemer, but as King.

"He come from the glorious kingdom."
"The manger in Bethlehem cradles a King."
"Born a King on Bethlehem's plain. Gold I bring to crown Him again."
"This, this is Christ the King, whom shepherds laud and angels sing."
"Come adore on bended knee, Christ the Lord, the newborn King."
"Joy to the world! The Lord is come. Let earth receive her King!"

The birth of Jesus Christ is the kingdom of heaven breaking into the earth — and that changes everything! The child born in Bethlehem so many years ago now rules and reigns over all at the right hand of the Father.

Jon Ruthven has written a splendid endorsement of our book, Miracles and Manifestations of the Holy Spirit in the History of the Church. Ruthven is Professor Emeritus at Regent University School of Divinity and the author of On the Cessation of the Charismata: The Protestant Polemic on Post Biblical Miracles (revised and expanded edition, Word & Spirit Press, forthcoming in 2010). 5th Anniversary of The Faith Log

This month marks the 5th anniversary of our main blog, The Faith Log. In those years, we have written and posted almost a thousand articles to help you build your faith and experience the kingdom of God. They are all still online and you can find them in the archive, by year and month, or you can search by keyword in the box at the upper left of each page.

Our blog has received many visitors from across the country and around the world (the internet really is a worldwide web). We've been blessed to hear from some of our guests, about how they have enjoyed and been strengthened and encouraged in faith by the articles — you might have noticed some of these in the "notes from our friends" we feature in our newsletter every month.

We recently added a "ShareThis" button to the blog that makes it easy for you to share any article with your social network, as well as one that can translate any article into a variety of foreign languages (that one is kinda fun, even if you don't know any other languages).

Another feature we have added this month, to help make the blog more accessible for you, is a Print/PDF function. You can find this at the end of each post. It is a link that takes you to a printer-friendly version of the post, which you can either print out or save as a PDF file. And as we reported last month, there is also a function that makes it easy to share articles with you favorite social networks, and one that translates articles into other languages.

The Ark of Your Testimony

And you shall put into the ark the Testimony which I will give you. (Exodus 25:16)

The Ark of the Covenant is also known as the Ark of the Testimony. The Hebrew word for “testimony” is ehud, which means “witness” or “record.” It comes from the primitive root ud, which means to duplicate or repeat. Literally, it refers to something that is spoken again and again. Its purpose is to remind, to bring up again in your mind, and bring to prominence in your thinking.

Testimony is a powerful thing. It can not only bring something back to your mind but also back to your heart. It can recreate the emotions, the sense of the experience of that to which it testifies. For example, have you ever heard an old song on the radio that reminded you of the days when you first heard that song? It can make you think of old friends and places and the way you felt back then. It is amazing how a song can bring them again to you in such an emotionally powerful way. When a song triggers a memory like that, people even say, “Oh, that takes me back.” And in a way, it really does take them back to that time and place, and those old friends. That song has become a testimony to them, a witness of things past but which still have great meaning.

That is what the Ark of the Testimony did. It was a witness that spoke of the covenant God made with Israel. Everything about it testified to something in their experience with Him. It represented — re-presented — His presence among them. On top was the mercy-seat, the place of atonement, of divine forgiveness. The Testimony that was placed inside was threefold: The Ten Commandments, a jar of manna and Aaron’s rod that budded (Hebrews 9:4).

The tables of the commandments spoke of God’s instruction, wisdom and promises — the covenant He made with Israel.
The jar of manna spoke of the miraculous provision God made for them in the wilderness, a provision that sustained them throughout their wilderness wanderings.
The rod of Aaron spoke of high priestly authority. For when the people tested God and rebelled against Aaron, God caused his rod to bud as a sign that He had indeed chosen Aaron.

The testimony of these things was always before them to remind them, not only of who God had been to them in the past, but also of who He would continue to be to them in the future. For a testimony is not just about what God has done, it also reveals what He is going to do.

David understood this. He kept an ark of testimony in his heart so that He would not forget the benefits of God in his life, to give God glory and continue to trust in Him. He specifically instructed and reminded himself: “Bless the LORD, O my soul; and all that is within me, bless His holy name! Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits” (Psalm 103:1-2). Look at what he kept in the ark of his testimony:

Who forgives all your iniquities (v. 3)
Who heals all your diseases (v. 3)
Who redeems your life from destruction (v. 4)
Who crowns you with lovingkindness and tender mercies (v. 4)
Who satisfies your mouth with good things (v. 5)
So that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s (v. 5)
The LORD executes righteousness and justice for all who are oppressed (v. 6)
He made known His ways to Moses, His acts to the children of Israel (v. 7)
The LORD is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in mercy (v. 8)

This is not just about the way God used to be, but about the way He is now and always will be. He is the same yesterday, today and forever — He does not change. The testimony of what He has done in the past is a seed of faith about what we can also expect Him to do in the future. When someone stands up and gives a testimony that God forgave them, saved them, rescued them, healed them, changed their life, it is a witness that He will do the same for whoever will trust Him. That is why it is important to remember the testimony of what God has done for you and share it with others. It is also why it is important to pay attention to the testimonies of others. They remind you of who God is and what He can do. The most important testimony, of course, is that of God Himself — what He was done for us in Jesus Christ, and the promises we have through faith in Him.

What is in the ark of your testimony? What are the promises of God’s Word that you are claiming? What are the times you have experienced God’s guidance? What are the provisions you have received from Him, the daily providences and the unusual supply that has shown up in your life? What are the ways that He has made His presence known to you? What are the ways He has revealed the life of Jesus to you? What are the ways He has revealed the life of Jesus through you to others? These are seeds of expectation that He will continue to be and do what He has always been and done, and that He will see you through any crisis.

Dear Barefoot Friends

Been doing a little remodeling on our blogsites recently. Knocked out a wall and added, enlarged the area and added a column on the left side. Insert logo banners and added navigation along the top to integrate them more with our home page. You can see what I mean at The Faith Log, Miracles and Manifestations, and at the top of this page.

We've also introduced a couple of new features at The Faith Log to make it more servicable for you:

Blog Translator. First, we have added a language translator, using the Google Translation function. The image contains a number of flags, and when you go to the blog and click on one of those, Google translates that blog page into the language that corresponds to the flag you click. Languages indicated by the flags include Arabic, Chinese (simplified), French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish. But once you click on any of them, the Google bar that appears gives you many other language options. I do not know how well they all work, but my brother-in-law says that the conversion into Spanish is pretty good. If you know any of those languages, test it out and let us know how it does. It's a lot of fun.

ShareThis. Another new feature is the ShareThis button. If you like a particular article and would like to share it with any of your social networks, you can just click on this link, which can be easily found at the end of each post, and a little window will pop up with icons for many popular networks, including Facebook, Twitter, and MySpace. This feature is also available at our Miracles and Manifestations blog.

Smashwords. This month we have also been working to make our books available in more digital formats (in addition to paperback), readable on a variety of devices. We already have them out in PDF and Kindle and Mobi format. Now we are adding Epub, LRF (Sony Reader) and PDB (Palm Doc) versions. These new ones are available at our Smashwords page.

How to Have a Blessed Economy

Blessed is the man who fears the Lord,
Who delights greatly in His commandments.
(Psalm 112:1)

Blessed speaks of great happiness and bliss. What is the cause of such an exceedingly happy condition? The fear of the Lord, and delighting in His commandments.

The fear of the Lord speaks of living in supreme awe of Him. It is loving what He loves and hating what He hates. It is recognizing that His displeasure is greatly to be avoided but His favor is greatly to be desired. To delight in something is to have a desire for it, to take pleasure in it. Here, it is modified by the word “greatly,” which speaks of exceeding abundance, completeness, and diligence. This delight, desire and pleasure is wholehearted and intense. When we start to understand how awesome God is, how great His love and how marvelous His favor, we begin to take intense pleasure in His ways — and that leads to bliss, as this psalm describes.

Dear Barefoot Friends,

Last week, early Monday morning, my grandmother, Frances M. Bostick, went to be with Jesus. She was 99. My brothers and I traveled to Spartanburg, SC and arranged the funeral. It was a good service, conducted by her Baptist pastor, John Lancaster, and assisted by a Pentecostal preacher who had known Granny for years. It almost broke out into a campmeeting.

For years, Granny and her husband, Garrette H. Bostick, had ministered together, first in the hills of western North Carolina with the Blue Ridge Mountain Bible Mission in the 1940s, then in itinerant and church ministry in the 1950s as Garrette served as pastor of Ansel Street Chapel in Spartanburg. That is where Joe Mosley, the preacher who assisted at Granny’s funeral, first met them and came to know the Lord under Garrette’s ministry.

After Garrette went to be with the Lord in 1965, Granny continued on in ministry in a variety of forms: distributing gospel tracts, teaching “Good News” clubs for children (she really knew how to work a flannelgraph), Jewish evangelism, working with girl’s homes and women in jail and prison ministries, playing piano and singing here and there for churches and other gatherings. She was always looking for an opportunity to encourage others with the word of the gospel. Even in her nineties, if you spoke with her on the phone, you were liable to have her sing you a song.

Up until last year, she was still living on her own in a little apartment she had occupied for 25 years. She had many friends who would help her out with various chores and errands. But the time came when she realized she needed to move into Valley Falls Terrace, an area nursing home where her increasing medicals needs could be met. Though her body was failing her mind was still sharp — something the attendants at the home appreciated — and her evangelistic spirit still strong.

My brothers and I are all in Florida, and it was difficult for us to arrange care for her in South Carolina, so we are grateful for all her friends in Spartanburg who assisted her over the years. Through their care and again at the funeral, we have seen that Granny was well-loved and respected.

On Thursday, we committed Granny’s body to the ground from which it came, where it will await a future day, for we live in sure and certain hope of the resurrection. In the meantime, she is rejoicing in the presence of the Lord with Garrette and my mother. So we are rejoicing, too.

All is well.

Faith-Builder: What Will You Call It?

HERE'S AN AMAZING THING: God created man in His own image — to be like Him — and gave him dominion over all the earth (Genesis 1:26-28). He formed Adam from the dust, then puffed the breath of life into his nostrils, and man became a “living being” (Genesis 2:7). The Hebrew is nephesh chayah. The Targum Onkelos, an ancient Jewish commentary, says that man became a “speaking spirit.” Just as God had the ability to speak — and by it called the heavens and earth into existence — man, created in the likeness of God, had the same ability to use words. Dear Barefoot Friends

The last couple of months have seen a change of pace. Perhaps just the effect of Summer. I've been doing less writing and blogging lately, and more reading and studying. Also been doing some work on the house.

In our Tuesday morning Bible study, we are continuing through the book of Hebrews. We're now on chapter 11, the "Hall of Fame of Faith." Taking our time to consider how faith operates, and how faith and patience work together until we see the promises of God fulfilled.

April Update

Dear Barefoot Friends

The year is moving right along — ahead of schedule, it seems. It is already April. In just a couple of days, Suzanne and I will be celebrating 31 years of marriage. Sure doesn't seem that long, though. For some people, it might be a sign and a wonder, but for us it is simply love, and it keeps on getting better and better. The kids are both grown — one is married and the other is heading in that direction. God has shown His favor on us and them in this economy and they all have good jobs. And after 31 years, Suz and I are ready for some grandchildren. Not that we're rushing anybody ... just saying.

IAM 2009 Convening

We had a wonderful time this year at the annual convening of International Apostolic Ministries, fellowshipping with old friends and making a lot of new ones, too. Had some great worship and some good messages. Mostly, though, we enjoyed hanging around the barrel of God's goodness, soaking and splashing in His joy. One thing that blessed and encouraged us was a testimony Pastor Percy Jeptha, of Baruch Haba Christian Center in Bishop Lavis District of Capetown, South Africa, shared with us. About four years ago, I gave him some of our Healing Scriptures and Prayers books and CDs because his people were on my heart and I wanted to somehow touch them.

Pastor Percy graciously received them and ministered with them. One person who was helped by them was a woman who was dying of cancer — the doctors told her she had only six months to live. Her hair had fallen out because of chemotherapy. She listened to our healing CDs, and four years later, she is doing well and has a full head of hair again. There is healing in the Word of God and the blood of Jesus, and we are thankful we could play a part in this woman's recovery.

Dear Barefoot Friends

Spring is almost here and there is much to do, Bible studies to teach, blogs to write, and also sprucing up around the house. In the Tuesday a.m. Bible study, we are continuing through Hebrews, now in chapter 7. At the end of March, Suz and I will be at the annual convening of International Apostolic Ministries (this is where we received our ordination).

As I have been preparing this newsletter, it has occurred to me that our ministry has quite a lot to do with books — reading books, writing books, recommending books, and even designing books. It also involves a lot of writing — blogs, articles, answering emails, discussing spiritual issues in online forums, "retasking" our books in a variety of formats, and, of course, our newsletters. It never ceases to amaze me how far this kind of Bible-teaching ministry can reach. Our blogs and web pages receive visitors from across the country and around the world, and our books go out near and far. This has become an international ministry, at least in cyberspace (it really is a worldwide web).

One of the fascinating things to me is how fast the ministry of writing has moved beyond the printed page. Our books are not just available in paperback, but also digital form as PDF and Mobi. They are also available as Kindle editions.

Kindle is Amazon's new digital reader and is quickly becoming quite popular as a convenient and portable device for people who love to read on the go. Amazon has just released the Kindle 2. With it, you can download books instantly and keep a rather large library with you at all times, yet it is very compact — about 5 x 8 inches, a little less than half an inch thick, and weighs only about 10 ounces. Amazing. You can learn more about the reader here.

Eight of our books are now formatted for Kindle, including our newest one. Amazon is also offering a free app so you can read all our Kindle books on your iPhone.

These are interesting times and we are looking forward to what the Lord has in store. There is a lot of anxiety and panic going on in the world, but keep your focus of Jesus, seeking the Kingdom of God and His righteousness, and He will take care of everything you need. Dear Barefoot Friends

New year, new opportunities, new challenges (which are really opportunities in disguise). The world is a'twitter about the economy and other things. However, for those who follow after Jesus Christ and seek the kingdom of God and righteousness (His way of doing things), though we are in the world, we are not of it. In Isaiah 54:2-3, we find a different call than the world is hearing.

Enlarge the place of your tent,
And let them stretch out the curtains of your dwellings;
Do not spare;
Lengthen your cords,
And strengthen your stakes.
For you shall expand to the right and to the left,
And your descendants will inherit the nations,
And make the desolate cities inhabited.

It is a call to preparation, to enlargement, to stretching out into the dream God has given you. It is not a time for sparing or holding back your resources but a time for lengthening your tent cords and strengthening your stakes, to expand your vision on all sides. God is giving us an inheritance to live out and a legacy for the next generation that will bless the nations, make the barren places fertile and bring life to the desolate cities.

Ever since Jesus came, the kingdom of God has been forcefully advancing and forceful men lay hold it (Matthew 11:12 NIV). Luke’s version says, “Since that time the kingdom of God has been preached, and everyone is pressing into it.” (Luke 16:16 NKJV; see A Kingdom Forcefully Advancing).

Now is the time to keep pressing in for the kingdom of God to be fulfilled in the world and His will do be done on earth as it is in heaven. We are moving forward, in Jesus' name.

Dear Barefoot Friends,

Another busy month. Writing, working on various projects, coursework towards a Master's, redesigning the website. In the Tuesday a.m. Bible study, we have begun a study in the book of Hebrews. It's about hanging in with faith when things get tough. Seems quite appropriate for these days. I recenlty returned to working on my Master's degree in Christian Studies through Luther Rice Seminary. Thought I was easing into it by beginning with one course this semester. What I didn't realize, though, was that it was a "mini-term," course which means a whole course squashed into half the time. So I was twice as busy on that as I had anticipated. Very invigorating. That's done now and I am free of coursework until next semester when I take a course on the Theology and Practice of Evangelism. The one I just finished was Spiritual Formation, and I got an A.

Much more to do and, of course, we are heading into the holiday seasons. We hope you have a very joyous Thanksgiving.

The Faith Log Celebrates 4th Anniversary

This month we celebrate the fourth anniversary of The Faith Log. It has been a great opportunity for getting out the Word and writing about the dynamics of prayer and faith. And as you can see from above, we have been getting visitors from all over the world (as I keep saying, it really is a worldwide web). We are up to almost 900 faith-building articles that we have written and uploaded. Some are short and sweet, others are longer, and we often include a brief invitation to receive Christ. We have heard from a lot of people who have been blessed by the blog. That's always nice and encourages us to keep doing what we're doing. We'd love to hear from you, too.

If August was busy, September was a whirlwind. Over the Labor Day weekend, Suz and I traveled to Marietta, GA for a Bible college reunion. The next weekend we flew to Pennsylvania for our nephew's wedding. The following weekend we drove up to Myrtle Beach for our annual vacation (its cooler and less crowded in September) and returned home the Sunday after that. Did I mention that during all this I also got back to work on my Master's degree (after about 14 years)? Yeah, there's a lot going on. FBC Reunion

The reunion for Florida Bible College was pretty amazing for us. About 300 friends, alumni and former students showed up. It had been 30 years or more since we had seen most of these folks, but we were especially blessed to see how the faithfulness of the Lord has brought us all through "many dangers, toils and snares." Though many were wounded by their Bible college experience (which is not unique to our college, but pretty common to Bible colleges across the board — we often tend to hurt, and be hurt by, the ones we love the most), the grace of God has wonderfully dissolved those old wounds, and all that is left is love and tears of joy for each other. [Pictured: Jeff on left, with old friends from college. Lee Stanford, former college president, in the middle. All very "prosperous" fellows.]

At a special worship service that Sunday morning, I was privileged to lead the Call to Worship, something I really love to do. I was asked to read Psalm 47 (the psalms are my favorite source for worship). At the end of the service, after a strong message about moving forward in our faith journey, we shared in the Lord's Supper. I didn't know that had been planned, though I was really hoping it would be. It was blessing upon blessing as, at the Table, we were given the opportunity to receive prayer and anointing with oil, which had not at all been characteristic of our former college days, but means so very much to me now. My only agenda for the weekend was to love on everybody and give out lots of hugs. We also wanted to bless everyone with copies of our music CDs (my musical contribution to the weekend).

It was all so wonderful, I'm getting teary even now just recalling it. Thanks to Facebook, which so many of us are registered on, we are keeping in touch with each other. [Pictured: Jeff hanging out with the Reformed group.]

The Table of the Lord (work in progress)

The next new project we will be releasing is The Table of the Lord: Forty Meditations on the Bread of Life and the Cup of Salvation. God has been showing me some wonderful times of fellowship as I have as I have taken the Lord's Supper with various scriptures on my heart. It has been a wonderful time of exploring who He is in me and who I am in Him.

Spiritual Formation

Thought I'd ease back into my degree program at Luther Rice Seminary (Master of Arts in Christians Studies), so I took only one course (leaving five more to go). But that one turned out to be a regular course squashed into a mini-term, which means twice the work in half the time. Lotsa reading, along with a variety of assignments. Anyway, the course is Spiritual Formation, and I am enjoying it. The main text is Kenneth Boa's Conformed to His Image.

The seminary is located in Lithonia, GA (near Atlanta), but I am doing my coursework online, which is quite interactive with online discussions. We also have a small group assignment, and the ones I've been grouped with live pretty close to me, so we get to meet face to face, which I prefer over phone-conferencing and online "chat" mode. So far, it is all working out well.

August Update

Dear Barefoot Friends,

God keeps manifesting His goodness toward us, and we are glad. Suz and I have been experiencing some wonderful times of worship at our home church (Revival Outreach Center, Dover, FL). God is often showing her visions, particularly about how He is working in the lives of our children. And lately, I have been having a very real sense of being in God's throne room. Paul said that we have been raised up with Christ and seated with Him in the heavenlies, at the right hand of the Father (Ephesians 2:4-6). And the author of Hebrews invites us to come boldly before the throne of grace (Hebrews 4:16).

So that is what I have been doing, not only at worship on Sunday, but also frequently at the Table of the Lord throughout the week. I'm not sure how to describe it, but it is as if the dimension of heaven comes like an overlay upon the earth, and I am aware of the place where I am seated in the heavenlies, and also where I am located on earth — both at the same time. In the Spirit, I experience the Father, the Lord Jesus, and the angels singing before God. Sometimes I have danced with the angels in joyful worship, and sometimes even with the Lord Jesus. I do not mean to say that I have seen or heard these things in a particular way that I can describe. But I have experienced them and been acutely aware of them. David said that in the presence of the LORD there is fulness of joy, and at His right hand (where we are seated in Christ) are pleasures forevermore (Psalm 16:11). I have been experiencing that joy in a new and deeper way than I did before (Thank you, Lord Jesus). I write this to encourage you that the realms of heaven are real, and that you and I have access to them in Jesus Christ.

Two New Book Projects

We've got a couple of new book projects in the works. Well, actually, I have been working on them for a while now. You may have noticed that a lot of our Faith Blog articles have some common themes. In recent months I have written a lot about two in particular. These articles have served as rough drafts. Now I am in the process of organizing the material, filling in some of the gaps and rewriting some bits, and then I will give them a good polishing up. The working titles are:

The kingdom of Heaven on Earth. This comes from a study I have been doing on the kingdom of God in the Gospel of Matthew. I call it the kingdom of Heaven on Earth because the kingdom of God is the will of God being done on earth as it is in heaven.
The Table of the Lord: Meditations on the Bread of Life and the Cup of Salvation. This one, of course, is about the Lord's Supper. God has been giving me some wonderful times of fellowship at Table with the Lord Jesus. The Bread and the Cup have much to show us about what Jesus has done for us and who we are in Him.

Which book will be released first, we do not know. My way of writing is to "strike while the iron is hot," and that shifts around a bit. I'll work with a passion for one, then let it marinate for a bit while I work with fresh fire for the other. And so it goes, back and forth.

Florida Bible College Alumni Reunion

Suz and I are planning to go to the Florida Bible College alumni reunion that is going to be held in Marietta, GA over this Labor Day weekend. We both went to FBC back in the mid-70s (its where Suz and I met). I graduated in '77 with a BA in Bible Education (with a minor in theology). We have been reconnecting with many old friends from the school on Facebook (like I said, it is an amazing website).

Luther Rice Seminary

Speaking of Bible education, this Fall I will return to finishing my Masters degree through Luther Rice Seminary. The school is in Lithonia, GA (near Atlanta), but I will be doing my coursework online, which offers a lot of interaction with the professors and other students. Miracles and Manifestations of the Holy Spirit in the History of the Church is an excellent resource for any student of the Bible. Jeff Doles has done a masterful job of relating historical facts in a compendium that is actually both easy to read and impacting. He clearly debunks the theory that miracles and manifestations of the Holy Spirit ceased when the apostles died or when the New Testament canon was completed. This book is well worth reading. You will be amazed at how much was going on in the church, even during what we call the 'Dark Ages.' You may also be surprised at the number of supernatural events that occurred during the ministry of Reformers and Revivalists since those dark ages.

As I discovered in my research for my own book, Signs and Wonders — To Seek or Not to Seek, God’s primary method of making believers out of unbelievers is the supernatural activity of the Holy Spirit. July Update

Dear Barefoot Friends,

These are the lazy, rainy days of Summer. Busy, but lazy ... if you know what I mean. We are developing new strategy for the ministry, with a goal to reach the world more through writing and the internet, while also maintaining personal interaction. From a recent book I read, I have come to realize that about 80% of results come from 20% of the effort, and 20% of the results come from about 80% of the effort. This means that most of the things people spend time and money on are not very effective. The trick, then, is to identify the 20% effort that is bringing the majority of results — and do more of it! In other words, it is about going with your strengths and either eliminating, automating or delegating the rest.

Teaching the Bible is not only the strength of this ministry, but also the purpose, which is, as we say in our mission statement, "To help you take the next step of faith in your walk with the Lord, live in the reality of His kingdom and experience the presence and power of God in your life." Paul said, "Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God" (Romans 10:17). So we teach the Word. Writing and the internet are merely vehicles toward that end.

The Tuesday a.m. Bible study group continues. We are working through Galatians, focusing on the freedom with which Christ has made us free, and how to stand firmly in it (Galatians 5:1). This week we considered the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23, "Love, joy, peace ... ), the qualities the Holy Spirit brings forth in us. It does not come by human effort or will-power. You can't clip fruit onto the branches of a tree and expect it to flourish, it must come forth from the life of the tree. In the same way, bearing the fruit of the Spirit requires a work of God's Spirit.
